Home:  Business  >  What is customer choice?

In the past, electric utilities such as BGE were tightly regulated by state laws. You could buy power only from your local utility and only at the price set by the state's Public Service Commission (PSC). Since July 2000, Maryland changed the laws and regulations that govern the electric industry. These changes are part of deregulation. This doesn't mean there are no regulations. It means competition and customer choice is available on the electric supply side of the industry. With deregulation, qualified electric suppliers are allowed to compete for your business.

What's Deregulated and What's Not
Your electric service consists of two parts - supply and delivery
  • Supply is the electricity itself, which is generated in power plants and transmitted across high voltage lines to substations.
  • Delivery, also called distribution, is the process of delivering it to you along a network of power lines - the local distribution system.
Electric deregulation only affects the supply part of the business, giving you a choice of the company that produces or supplies your power.

BGE's Role
BGE will still deliver the electricity to your home, organization or business, even if another company supplies it. This delivery service is still regulated by the Maryland Public Service Commission. And, because competition only affects the supply of electricity and not the delivery, all distribution lines will continue to be maintained by BGE. So you will still call us to handle emergencies and to restore power during outages.

BGE encourages you to investigate your options and make the choice that best meets your electric energy needs.
